Our latest College Spotlight blog feature takes a look at West Virginia University – Institute of Technology (WVU Tech).

Situated in Beckley, West Virginia on the East Coast of America, WVU Tech is a divisional campus of West Virginia University.

It is also technically the birthplace of Soccer Assist, but we will go more into that later.

Parents can be at ease knowing that there are a number of airports close to the University, making it easy for students to fly home on the holidays. Students can also take advantage of this and experience more of America by flying domestically to other major cities.

Soccer Assist has not only got personal experience of WVU Tech, the company has also secured a number of scholarships for students at this great University. Most recently placing Nigerian attacking midfielder Layomi Ogunfoworo. Women’s soccer player Jodie Pallant was also recently transferred to WVU Tech from Hartford University.

Academics

College’s programmes are housed across two campuses – The College of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences as well as the Leonard C. Nelson College of Engineering and Sciences.

There are a number of Majors to choose from – from Accounting to History and Psychology to Sports Management. You can view a list of subjects available on the academics section of the College website.

With an average class size of 17 students, classes provide students with a more personal and supportive environment. The College also boasts of being able to complement students’ academic learnings with real-world experiences, including internships and volunteer work.

Fees

Tuition fees for WVT range from $7,500 to $19,000 per academic year with Accommodation priced at around $11,300.

Securing a scholarship can greatly reduce these fees and Soccer Assist work with talented footballers (soccer players) and secure an average a 60-70% discount at colleges across the country.

Campus

It was at University Halls in West Virginia in October 2013 where the idea of Soccer Assist came about. Co-founders Tyrelle McLeod-Bentley & Junior Osei-Tutu sat in their dorm room discussing the lack of support they received from their scholarship agency – so they decided to start their own.

Since then the college has moved 45 miles south of the state, from Montgomery to Beckley. The move has seen enrolment increase over the years and the University has also been ranked one of the best return on investment.

Residence Halls for full time students are on-site in Beckley at Hogan Hall or University Hall.

With a number of student organizations both on and off-campus, entertainment and access to some of the nation’s best outdoor recreation are at your doorstep.

Golden Bears

Competing in the River States Conference of the NAIA league, WVT’s Athletic teams are known as the Golden Bears.

The Men’s Soccer Team is led by Head Coach Oliver Hewitt-Fisher who is in his third year in charge. His most recent success coming in 2019 having led the team who were crowned River State Champions and Conference Tournament Champions.

Meanwhile the women’s Soccer Team have a new coach in Kate Franks-Carr. Kate brings a wealth of experience to the role, including three championship rings.
