To get started, here’s a brief explanation on what a scholarship is. A scholarship is a financial award to a student for university/college fees so that they can further their education. That’s it. A soccer scholarship, therefore, is a financial award to a student for university/college fees so that they can further their education in exchange for representation of a soccer team. This financial award would provide a discount on your tuition fees.

These scholarships work on a percentage basis. The budget of the athletics department will determine how much can be allocated per student-athlete. Scholarships are also awarded on a year-by-year basis. After a yearly review of an individual’s performance, a decision will be made to increase or decrease the scholarship. This review will be based on a student’s attitude, sporting and academic performance.

There are approximately 3000 universities/colleges that could offer you a soccer scholarship. These are split into three divisions – the NCAA division, the NAIA division and the NJCAA division. More information about these divisions can be found in the External Links section.

Main Types of Scholarships

The three main types of scholarships that you can get – Athletic , Academic and International – are described in more detail below:

– Athletic Scholarships: These are given out to those who demonstrate excellence in their sport. In your case, these types of scholarships would be available for those who are exceptionally gifted at playing soccer.

– Academic Scholarships: This scholarship is awarded to those who demonstrate excellence in their academic studies. For a soccer scholarship, academic excellence is as important as athletic excellence.

– International Scholarships: Some universities/colleges in the US give out scholarships based on your international background. More information on international scholarships can be found in the links at the bottom of the page.

Which scholarship would I be eligible for?

As a UK student wanting to play soccer in the US, you would be considered a Student-Athlete. This means you would have to show excellence both academically and athletically to be eligible for a soccer scholarship. If you are at the top of your game for your studies and your soccer, then you will get more scholarship offers from more prestigious universities/colleges.

If you are a non-UK student wanting to play soccer in the US, you would be considered a Student-Athlete. This again means you would have to show excellence both academically and athletically to be eligible for a soccer scholarship. However, if you are from a non-English speaking country, you would be required to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). More information on the application process for non-UK students can be found below.
